About Me and What I Do
About Me and What I Do
We live in a "throw it away world". Nothing is made to last these days, if so, how would retailers make any money – right?! Something stops working…”Just get a new one”. Clothes get a hole, stain or fade…”Throw them out”. A vase or clock breaks, not a thought goes into where all these things being thrown out go. We are filling landfills faster every year leading to a serious problem in years to come. Don’t worry, our children and grandchildren will take of it right?? These days you hear words like ‘Upcycling’ and ‘Shabby Chic’ to describe the popular trend of re-purposing items.
Here's where I come in. I have been creative all my life and have been dedicating more time and energy into the visual arts by sculpting (3D), painting (2D) by recycling items to support upcycling or re-purposing to reduce waste and the carbon footprint since 2013. It's a fun way to be creative!
Recently a client asked me to create a sculpture depicting her granddaughter and herself looking at a bird nest together. She provided me with a nest she found on her property and an old candle holder that was no longer being used. I created the above composition and she fell in love, win, win! Upcycling, repurposing, whatever you want to call, I encourage you to take a second look at throwaway items to create something new.
